People assume back glass is the easy version of a windshield. It is not. A windshield is one laminated pane with a camera behind it. A rear window is tempered glass with a heating grid printed onto it, often an antenna, sometimes a wiper motor and a third brake light, and it fails by disintegrating into thousands of pebbles that end up everywhere. Every one of those things adds a step.
Those thin lines are a printed heating circuit with tabs soldered at each side. Both connections get reattached and tested, so you find out it works from us rather than the first cold morning in January.
Plenty of vehicles run the radio antenna through the back glass. Reconnect it wrong and your reception quietly dies, which is the kind of thing people notice a week later and never connect to the glass.
Hatchbacks and SUVs often carry a rear wiper motor and a third brake light in or around the glass. Both come off, both go back on, both get checked.

Why It Explodes
Your windshield is laminated, which is why a rock leaves a chip instead of a hole. Rear windows are tempered, built to shatter into thousands of dull-edged pebbles rather than long blades. That is a deliberate safety choice and it works, but it means there is no in-between state. One moment the glass is fine and the next it is in your back seat, and there is no repairing your way out of it.
In Phoenix the usual causes are a break-in, a rear-end collision, or a rock off a truck on the 101. Occasionally it is heat stress on glass that already had a stone bruise nobody noticed. Whichever it was, the vehicle is not weatherproof until it is replaced, and leaving an open rear opening through a dust storm turns a glass bill into an interior detailing bill.
